Navisworks

How did we gt here... The construction industry started with 2D drawing and drafting which were visualized and engineers had to use imagination for proper elevation and manage work. The industry soon got 3D modeling software such as AutoCAD 3D, 3Ds Max, and Civil 3D. This surely changed the industry with 3D simulation and drafting techniques. The need for more sophisticated and one-stop-shop software was seen, with which REVIT and Navisworks came into the scene. REVIT gave the most significant 3D models and which can be used by Architects-Construction-Engineers workers. This incorporated with BIM gave a leap to this industry with many draught decades. The need for Navisworks was seen as a scheduling and modeling combination and to verify the planning of the project which can give us Clash free and seamless construction process.  Navisworks gives us output in various forms which are- 3D model, Models with a working simulation which shows workers, machines, vehicles, and cr...

QUICKGRID- Open Source Software For Surveying

This is open-source software that will help you create a counter map with a set of scattered data points that represents a surface. By this, the program generates a grid and displays the surface with a counter map. QUICKGrid can be used in the surveying plots which are far and remote. The coordinates can be found with help of Google Earth Studio. The coordinates then can be imported into the program and the program will create a topographical map which can be used to give counter map which can be used for road construction to find the cutting and filling location. The program runs on modest hardware and it's really fast with a simple interface. The information of this Program is not too much out on the net. But this is what I have experienced while I used it.

Tekla Structures

Student View: As a Civil Engineering Student, I had tried software such as STAAD Pro, ETABS and personally used Tekla Structures (Training).  From all this software the one thing, I can say Tekla has better software experience and a good interface. The software is available on site and students can sign-in and complete the training section and they give you Certificate.  Tekla Structures is one of the most advanced software with structural BIM Software, which lets you make/create, manage and share materials in a 3D model. The model is packed full of valuable construction info and conceptual planning to fabrication, construction, and maintenance for design details. Tekla Structure has an Indian Environment similar to other software and it's easy to make changes and define materials and assign them to the structure. And for any problem, they have local training and support there for you. The software is used by: Steel Detailers and Fabricators Bridge Engineers Concrete Contracto...

ArcGIS - Civil Engineering Software

ArcGIS As a student, researcher, and engineer you would have done projects in which at some point you need maps and details in it which can be used for projects. ArcGIS is a software that helps and gives you a chance to create, use, and develop apps that require maps.  The ArcGIS software gives you various backgrounds such as topographical view, satellite view, road path, buildings area, and many other views on which you can create, analyze, and share geographic information. The various situation in which you can make maps: Advanced Analytics: You can make the area, road, and point identified in the map which is the basic thing in this software. Advanced Visualization: With this, you can make creative, advanced informative and interactive maps. 2D & 3D: You might have seen the Google Earth 3D view and the previous 2D version which gives a more precise view of the earth, work in 2D & 3D dimension in ArcGIS will also provide you such an interface to create one. Image Processi...

LiDAR in Civil Engineering

LiDAR in Civil Engineering What is LiDAR? The acronym of LiDAR is Light Detection and Ranging, which is a form of remote sensing method used to examine the surface surrounding it. It is the surveying method that calculates the distance of an object by illuminating the object with the senor. The working is much similar to a radar sensor but instead of sending radio waves, it emits a pulse of infrared light and measures how long they take to come back after hitting nearby objects. How do LiDAR works? The sensor emits the infrared light millions of times in a second and then the readings are compiled and results into a so-called point cloud which you can say a 3-D image in real-time.  The working principle of LiDAR is really quite simple. The sensor generates a laser pulse train sent to the surface/object to measure the time and it takes to return to the source again. Much accurate distance can be then calculated to the points on the ground and elevation can be determined along with t...

EPANET - Open Source Software

INTRODUCTION: EPANET is a public domain, water distribution system modeling software package developed by Water Supply and Water Resources Division. It performs an extended period simulation of hydraulic and water quality behavior within pressurized pipe networks and is designed to be "a research tool that improves our understanding of the movement and fate of drinking water constituents within distribution system". EPANET first appeared in 1993. EPANET is available both as a standalone program and as an open-source toolkit. Its computational engine is used by many software companies that develop the more powerful, proprietary package, often GIS-centric. Therefore it is arguably considered as the industry standard. EPANET provides an integrated environment for editing network input data, running hydraulic and water quality simulations, and viewing the results in a variety of formats. HEADLOSS IN PIPE SEGMENTS: EPANET hydraulic engine computes headloss along the pipes by using...
