Water Grid - Gujarat, India

Water Grid - Gujarat, India
We have seen the power grid system but in this era of innovation, humans are coming with new ideas to help the community. Here we will see a water distribution system that acts as a Power Grid system and hence called Water Grid
In the state of Gujarat in India, the state government is building a water distribution system for the people of the state who stay in a remote area. The state has a large variety of areas such as the desert area in the north, semi-arid to the arid region in the west, fertile and green land in the east and south.

The System

The state first developed a large dam on the Narmada River and made one of the largest dams in India. The water passes through the system of canals and pipelines to the Dhanki, Surendranagar in the north-central part of the state. There is a large water tank where the incoming water enters, then the water with the help of water pumps is lifted and pass-through pipelines to various parts of the state such as the desert region - Kutch, semiarid and arid region - Saurashtra and the fertile land in the south of the state.

The Grid

The system has three branches from the Dhanki region to all the three regions mentioned above. The average diameter of the pipeline used is 2.4 meters from which a medium-size car can easily pass through. The branches of the pipelines on the map look similar to the power grid lines which run hundreds of kilometers to supply power to the remote regions. Thus this system of distribution is also called the Water Grid System as the water lines pass through many regions over kilometers to reach out to the extreme most region of the state.

The Engineering

The pipes were rolled up to 100-200 degrees and then outside was coated with fusion bond epoxy layer and low-density polyethylene for prevention of corrosion and the inner layer was coated with a food-grade epoxy layer. The pumping work at Dhanki is about 1650 Million liters of water daily to benefit 75 lakh people.

The pumps here can fill 2 Olympic Size Swimming Pools in less than 2 minutes and the amount of iron used in the pipeline is equivalent to building 40 Eiffel Towers. Also, the amount of electricity required is equivalent to the consumption of 4 cities like Surendranagar. Where other cities in India give 50-60 liters of water per capita, Gujarat gives at-least 100 liters per capita to remote places also.
Many other states have also adopted this system such as Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
Check Water Grid - Maharashtra, India. I Will come up with Andhra Pradesh soon.

Great Man-Made River (GMR)

Libya's Great Man Made River: The Great Man-Made River in Libya is one of the most ambitious Civil Engineering Project in history of mankind.  In the year 1953, the Libya Government found out not only vast oil reserves but also vast quantity of fresh water locked under the strata, most of the water was trapped around 7000-30000 years ago which is divided in 4 different basins. The first basin is named Kufra basin which is neat Egypt Border which covers almost 35000 sq kilometer which is quite deep around 2000 m deep. The other basin is in Sirte Basin which cover 10000 sq kilometer, third in Murzuk Basin and the last in Jabal Fezzan Basin covering 4800 sq kilometers area.  The GMR project will be used to transfer water to North of the country to provide water for irrigation purpose for more than 6 million  people. This will be a changing point  for Libya and the Colonel Muammar Gaddafi called it the Eighth Wonder of World. The work started in 1984 of the project and estimated to be
