### What Is Civil Engineering?

I am a Civil Engineering student, pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Mumbai. Before I took admission in this stream I had the only idea that Civil Engineering means building roads, bridges, and buildings, but after getting in this stream I came across such topics that I didn't think of. The Civil Engineering field does have building roads, bridges, buildings along with railways, irrigation projects, hydraulics, surveying, environmental engineering, and structural analysis.
All day-to-day tasks we do right from morning to evening, all things are built and facilitated by Civil Engineers. Here I will try to give you a short idea of why you should choose this topic and why will it grow after this pandemic situation, unlike other fields.
Let's see some core subjects:

### Strength Of Material:

Here you will study in detail about the material and its properties such as stress and strain and basics of moment and torque.

### Structural Analysis:

In Structural Analysis you will study about structural members such as beams, frames, and trusses. Also, you will get to know about Arches and how to form a structural matrix.

### Design and Drawing of Steel Structure:

Steel Structure members such as bolts, welds, fasteners, batten, beams, and plates along with girders and industrial roofs.

### Building Material:

In this, you will study about construction elements such as cement, mortar, lime, concrete, brick, and timber.

### Soil Mechanics:

Detail study of properties and characteristics of soil such as permeability, well hydraulics, compressibility, consolidation, seepage, stress, and strength of the soil. Further, you will come across the study of the foundation, bearing capacity, and soil exploration.

### Fluid Mechanics:

Fluid Mechanics is a study of the flow of water in an open channel and pipe flow. In the open channel flow, you will come to know about different types of flow, weir, notches, and various canal shapes. In Pipe Flow, you will come across a study of optimum pipe size and discharges and velocities.

### Environmental Engineering:

In part 1 of Environmental Engineering, you will study about freshwater and the treatment of water for domestic use.
In part 2 of Environmental Engineering, you will study about sewage and sludge and its treatment after domestic and industrial use.

### Highway Engineering:

Highway Engineering will make you understand about Highway Development Plan, Design, Material, and Pavement Design.

### Railway Engineering:

In Railway Engineering, you will study about railway tracks, joints, welds, and ballast and sleeper formation on the ground. In this, you will also study about crossing and points.

### Airport, Harbour, and Tunnel Engineering:

Design of Airport Runway, Airport capacity, tunneling area, and taxiway are studied in this subject.
Harbour capacity and design are under this subject along with the port.

### Surveying:

Surveying is the first and basic step in Civil Engineering where you will study about surveying, leveling, traversing, and other modern methods.
