Metro

What is Metro?

They are specially designed to run in metropolitan cities while you will see local trains run to connect the city to its suburbs.

Why was the need for Metro?

Indian Metro
With ever-increasing traffic in metropolitan cities and the rise in noise and air pollution made the engineers think of an alternate way to travel in the city itself. The metro trains are set to reduce air and noise pollution by reducing the number of passengers traveling by car and will also reduce the use of fuel per passenger as it runs on electricity. This is not just in India but a world problem.

When this concept came to World and India?

The first metro started in London, called London Underground public transit in 1863. The best metro in the world is seen in Hong Kong, London, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and many more countries.

The first Metro system in India was in Kolkata (1984) but the one which grew or is seen to be the best and busiest is Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro is the largest metro project which is also expanding in phases. With success from the launch and other cities demanded the need for such a transit system.

Different Metro's and Their Engineering Concept:

Kolkata Metro (1984):

Indian Metro
There are in all 6 Metro Lines and major of the metro lines are underground which were completed in phases and the latest phase of line 6 has open in 2020, of Line 6 Kavi Subhash-Biman Bandar Metro.

Delhi Metro (2002):

Indian Metro
The Delhi metro system the largest system in India with 348 km long with 10 lines with more than 250 stations. The engineer behind the Metro is "Elattuvalapi Sreedharan" called "Metro Man".

The major part of the Delhi metro is elevated and has been growing phase by phase continuously and this can be seen in the construction of the metro which has in-situ cast members in old lines, girder with the tensioning system in few parts and in the new line the U-girders which are pre-cast in the factory and then just placed at the site.

Namma Metro (2011):

Indian Metro
The Namma Metro, Banglore has 2 lines and is the first metro in Southern India with mix metro system as a tunnel, on grade and elevated with 40+ stations.

Rapid Metro Gurgaon (2013):

Indian Metro
This metro in Haryana has a single line and 12 metro stations. This was also the first metro in India to be built under Public-Private Partnership (PPP model) and then in 2019, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation took over the operation.

Mumbai Metro (2014):

Indian Metro
This was also based on PPP model a=done with a partnership with Reliance. The Mumbai Metro has planned to complete 14 new lines all over the city and some will connect to other cities around it such as Thane and Navi Mumbai.

Mumbai Metro has taken over the project by creating new techniques and technological advancements such as new pre-cast members and factory new pile cap design. The metro project consists of underground and elevated sections.

Jaipur Metro (2015):

Indian Metro
This is the first metro in India with a double-decker elevated mero track and road transit system and fully elevated system in India.

Chennai Metro (2015):

This metro line has also the first interconnecting loop system of metro connecting two lines.

Kochi Metro (2017):

This was the first metro of India with a CBTC signal system.

Lucknow Metro (2017):

This is by far the fastest commissioned metro line in the country.

There are many more lines that will make this a never-ending blog. Metro Line other than above mentioned:

Great Man-Made River (GMR)

Libya's Great Man Made River: The Great Man-Made River in Libya is one of the most ambitious Civil Engineering Project in history of mankind.  In the year 1953, the Libya Government found out not only vast oil reserves but also vast quantity of fresh water locked under the strata, most of the water was trapped around 7000-30000 years ago which is divided in 4 different basins. The first basin is named Kufra basin which is neat Egypt Border which covers almost 35000 sq kilometer which is quite deep around 2000 m deep. The other basin is in Sirte Basin which cover 10000 sq kilometer, third in Murzuk Basin and the last in Jabal Fezzan Basin covering 4800 sq kilometers area.  The GMR project will be used to transfer water to North of the country to provide water for irrigation purpose for more than 6 million  people. This will be a changing point  for Libya and the Colonel Muammar Gaddafi called it the Eighth Wonder of World. The work started in 1984 of the project and estimated to be
