Three Gorges Dam
As the increase in the demand for electricity in the world increases, the need to develop electricity was seen and numerous methods of producing electricity were tried. One of the most impressive methods was rotating magnet around the copper coil. This was seen to be done by the force of water dropping over a height. The process was used in many forms and this required a large amount of water and hence building a dam was needed. This is called hydroelectricity plants. For other types of Dam Click Here
As we know China has the power to build huge structures that can make the world look an ant. The need for electricity was increasing and hence they needed a huge dam that can help improve their economy. The plan of Three Gorges Dam was put forth and the work of the dam was started. The dam was to be built on the Yangtze River which is the main river of southeast China and also had many ships and cargo to pass this river.
What is unique about it?
31 Billion USD, 2.335 km Long, 60 Storey high (181 m), Capacity 39.3 cubic km, 32 Turbines, Produces 700 MW Power.
The dam was completed in 2003 and then the number of turbines from 3 has increased to 32. But due to dam construction, the downstream farmers don't get the flood water of which the soil loses fertility and this problem was solved by providing the gates at the bottom of the dam which allows to clean out the sediments settling at the bottom.
As we talked about the ship movement the dam has also solved the problem of this, they have built the world's largest ship lift. There is also a ship climber that pickups the ship and then takes it up to the top and then rotates it and drops down to the reservoir. The dam also has a canal system that helps to shift many cargo ships at a time. But this canal system has a time period of 90 min whereas the shift lift takes around 30 min for passenger ships which cannot take a wait up time that long.
